The prevalence of Asymmetric Sensorineural Hearing Loss (ASNHL) in the elderly population of the United States
According to data from the National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS) in 2023, 67.9% of the elderly population aged 70 and above have varying degrees of hearing loss, with a significant proportion exhibiting asymmetric hearing loss in the left and right ears. It is worth noting that the study indicates that hearing loss has the highest prevalence among non Hispanic white individuals, which is consistent with the distribution characteristics of some populations in ASNHL.
Another study targeting community-dwelling elderly population aged 71 and above in the United States showed that 28% of elderly Medicare beneficiaries (53% female, 7% black, and 6% Hispanic in the sample) had hearing loss. Among elderly people aged 90 and above, 59% experience dual sensory loss (hearing and vision), 39% experience single sensory loss, and only 2% have no sensory loss.
Among the extremely elderly population aged 95 and above, hearing loss is widespread, and asymmetric hearing loss is extremely common. The study clearly indicates that in this "oldest" elderly population, hearing asymmetry and left-right asymmetry in word recognition scores are common phenomena.
